A look behind the scenes...

The story

It all began, against all expectations, in the valley next to Verzasca: Vallemaggia. Two enterprising gentlemen, Fabio Lafranchi and Raffaele Dadò, following their passion for music and the desire to make their valley’s tourist offerings more attractive, decided to organize the Vallemaggia Magic Blues, a traveling blues music festival. Carmen Gianettoni was thrilled by the event and immediately expressed her desire to create a similar offering in Valle Verzasca.

One spring evening in 2005, the ice rink at the Sonogno Sports Center appeared to everyone as the ideal place to bring a new festival to life. However, a problem arose: what kind of music to offer? And that’s how the idea of creating a country music festival was born, a genre little known in Ticino, a great passion of Carmen’s, and one that also recalls the Ticino migrations to America in the last century.

When and how was the Verzasca Country Festival born?

Verzasca Country Festival

The idea began to take shape and Donatella Bonetti and Raffaele Meoli also got involved. The festival would be an opportunity to showcase Valle Verzasca and its associations. For this reason, the latter were invited to a meeting where Carmen enthusiastically presented her project. Six of the associations present, the Tennis Club Verzasca, the Bocciofila Monte Zucchero, the Gruppo Carnevale di Brione Verzasca, the Gruppo Manifestazioni di Brione Verzasca, the Gruppo Pattinaggio Valle Verzasca and the Corpo Pompieri Alta Verzasca decided to embark on the project. The first edition was held at the Sonogno ice rink on August 6, 2005 and was an immediate success. This was confirmed by the large public turnout, decidedly higher than expected: approximately 1500 people were estimated. And that’s how the Verzasca Country Festival became an annual event for country music enthusiasts. In 2006 the committee was joined in the organization by Rino Ceppi. The hard work was rewarded with an even more successful second edition: almost 3000 people flocked to Sonogno for the event. Over the years the organizing committee has undergone some changes with the departure of some associations that were promptly replaced by others. Between Mexican fajitas, a few line dance steps, a peek at the mighty Harley Davidsons and a horseback ride like real cowboys, this is the Verzasca Country Festival. All surrounded by the magnificent atmosphere of Sonogno and good country music. In these many years of Country, the festival stage has hosted numerous bands from Switzerland, Italy and even America that have offered music from tranquil bluegrass, to more rhythmic country, to explosive country-rock and rock’a’billy.

The organizers

The Verzasca Country Festival is organized by associations/groups from Valle Verzasca. These are the Corpo Pompieri Alta Verzasca, the Hockey Club Valle Verzasca and the Società Escursionistica Verzaschese. The committee is completed by the soul of the event: president Carmen Gianettoni and secretary and treasurer Ylenia Scettrini (who took over the work carried out for years by Seline Biaggi-Engelberger and then by Sheila Cappelletti). The event’s graphics are created and managed by Denise Jelmolini. The management of the electrical part is masterfully handled by Mr. Carmelo Pinana.

The Verzasca Country Festival cares about the environment. For this reason, starting in 2014 the VCF committee decided to introduce a special bus that connects Tenero to the event, with the intention of reducing the number of private vehicles in circulation. Since 2017, reusable cups have also been introduced to reduce the volume of plastic and waste produced during the event.
A huge thank you goes to all the volunteers who, with their great work, ensure the excellent success of the event!
